On the eve of the much-anticipated Royal Wedding, there’s excitement rippling throughout the world. News stations are on standby for the slightest movement outside Westminster Abbey and reporters are exhausting all their resources to find just exactly how Kate will be doing her hair and what the Queen will wear. Facebook and Twitter were alight with updates tweeting or retweeting any piece of news on the Royal Wedding worthy of 140 characters.
As I was monitoring our social media sites throughout the day at work, one status in particular caught my attention. I don’t remember what this girl said exactly but it was something to the extent of: “For every girl who grew up watching Disney movies, this is our fairy tales come true.” Wow. I am one of those girls who grew up watching all the “princess movies” [Cinderella and The Little Mermaid were my favorites]. Growing up, I definitely dreamed of meeting my Prince Charming and having the fairy tale wedding to go with it, which was usually reenacted by my Barbies in about a thousand different wedding scenarios.
My thoughts drifted to what my own wedding might look like…but to be honest, I’m still trying to decide between eloping, a wedding on the beach, or something more traditional. I don’t even have requirement number one so I have some time to think on it.
With a sigh of relief, my thoughts turned to two of my dear sweet friends [Erica and Erin] who will be marrying their respective beloveds this June about three weeks apart. I am excited to share in each of their “big days” which mark the beginning of a new and beautiful chapter in their lives. [I love you both dearly and am honored you have asked me to share in your big day.]
Smiling to myself, I found my thoughts wandering to a Wedding that was foretold about 2000 years ago….
Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:
“Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.
Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.”
(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.)
Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”
-Revelation 19: 6-9
What a day that will be when we, as God’s holy people, will be ready to meet our beloved bridegroom who is Christ himself! I’m barely ready to get married here on this earth so I can’t even begin to imagine myself as being ready or worthy to be presented as the bride of our Lord Jesus Christ! But, I have to remember that as I spend time in the Word, praying, and seeking His beautiful face, Christ is working in me to ready me for that glorious day that is yet to come. I’m sorry for the fanatics out there, but on that day, we will be saying, “Prince Who and What’s-Her-Face’s wedding do not compare to this.”
Tomorrow I will not wake up at 5 a.m. to watch The Royal Wedding as it unfolds because I love sleep more than them. However, I will watch video clips and go through a million photos of the Royal event marveling at Kate’s dress, how she did her hair, along with all the gorgeous and immaculate floral arrangements. I’ll probably slip back to the excitement of my younger years watching “princess movies,” dreaming about my own fairy tale, and playing “wedding” with my Barbies on the floor of my bedroom. My sweet friends will then come to mind and I’ll say a short prayer asking God to bless their upcoming nuptials. Finally, I’ll think about the wedding feast foretold and be reminded of the mercy, grace, and unfailing love that Jesus lavishes upon us.
